So what is the backpacker tax? For working visitors to Australia, this would mean that all income would be taxed at a rate of 32.5%. But thanks to an online petition, the tax has now been delayed by 6 months pending further review.
So what does this mean for currently visiting workers?
Well, at least for 6 months, nothing. The review is currently slated to introduce the tax in January, but as is with many of these policies that pop out of electioneering, if the same pushback is met again in 6 months time (especially by industries that rely on working visitors as a workforce), then there it is highly likely that it will be delayed again at least to the next financial year.
However, don’t let this put you off from lodging your 2015 tax return. Nothing has changed here, so there you won’t be put into a disadvantageous position.
